Your Summer Skincare Routine

Summer skincare products

It’s getting hot out there! That means that we need to switch up our skincare routine so that we’re protecting and supporting our skin through the stresses of heat and UV rays.

Summer brings a host of new challenges for our skin, including increased exposure to those harmful UV rays, higher levels of sweat and oil production, and a greater likelihood of pigmentation and sun damage.

Here’s some of my top tips as an Advanced Facialist, as well as some of my favourite trialled and tested products, to keep your skin healthy and glowing all season long!

Why You Need To Wear SPF

The first line of defence against sun damage is a good sunscreen. SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, and it measures how well a product can protect your skin from UVB rays - the type of radiation that causes sunburn and contributes to skin cancer. A sunscreen with an SPF rating of 30 blocks about 97% of UVB rays, while one with an SPF rating of 50 blocks about 98%.

We want to be blocking as much of those dangerous UVB and UVA rays as possible which is why I always recommend using factor 50 all over the body, but especially on that sensitive skin on your face.

Here’s my favourite SPF that I recommend to my clients:

Why You Get Dark Spots In Summer

You might notice an increase in spots or patches that are darker than the surrounding skin in hot weather, that’s because increased sun exposure can exacerbate pigmentation. Hyperpigmentation occurs when melanin (the pigment that gives our skin its colour) is overproduced in certain areas - a side effect of all that sunbathing.

Prevention is always better than a cure which is why your first choice should always be a decent SPF, reapplying every two hours or immediately after swimming or sweating heavily. And don't forget about those often-neglected areas like your ears, neck, hands, and feet!

Treating pigmentation and sun damage is one of the many things antioxidant serums are great at. Antioxidants like vitamin C can help brighten your complexion and fade dark spots over time by inhibiting melanin production, which is why I always recommend working this into your summertime skincare routine.

Avoid Acids and Opt for Hydrating Ingredients

While exfoliating acids like glycolic acid can be beneficial in removing dead skin cells and brightening the complexion, they can also make your skin more sensitive to the sun. Therefore, it's best to avoid using these products during the day in summer and instead switch to only using them at night.

Instead, opt for hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid and ceramides that can help maintain your skin's moisture barrier and prevent dehydration, which is common during the hot summer months.

My favourite hydrating products:

Cool Down with Ice Skin Therapy

Ice skin therapy is a popular Korean skincare trend that has gained traction worldwide. It involves rubbing an ice cube over your face to reduce inflammation, tighten pores, and give your skin a fresh, dewy look.

In summer, this practice can be particularly beneficial as it helps cool down the skin after a long day in the sun. You can even freeze aloe vera juice or green tea for added skincare benefits!

Final Thoughts on Summer Skincare

Summer skincare is all about protection and hydration. Make sure you're using a high-factor sunscreen (like factor 50) and reapplying it regularly throughout the day. Incorporate antioxidant serums into your routine to combat pigmentation issues and opt for hydrating ingredients over exfoliating acids throughout the day.

And finally, enjoy your summer! With these tips and products you can relax knowing that your skin is completely cared for during these hotter months.
