How to Build the Best Teen Skincare Routine for Back to School

With summer winding down and a new school year just starting, it’s the perfect time to refresh your skincare routine. Teenage skin can be tricky to manage, thanks to those ever-changing hormones, stress, and environmental factors. But don’t worry, a well-structured teenage skincare routine can help keep those breakouts in check and promote healthy, glowing skin. Let’s dive into the do’s and don’ts of teenage skincare that will have you looking your best as you head back to school.

Understanding Teenage Skin

Teenage skin has a mind of its own, often swinging between being oily and prone to breakouts. This is all due to hormonal changes that kick in during puberty. Knowing your skin type, whether it’s oily, dry, or somewhere in between, is the first step in picking the right products for your routine.

The Importance of a Skincare Routine

Consistency is key when it comes to managing common teenage skin issues like acne, blackheads, and excess oil. Establishing a solid routine now will not only help you tackle these challenges but also set you up for healthier skin in the long run.

The Do’s of Teenage Skincare Routine

1. Do Cleanse Twice Daily

Cleansing is the foundation of any good skincare routine. It helps remove dirt, oil, and makeup, keeping your pores clear. Aim to cleanse your face twice a day - once in the morning and again before bed. Look for gentle cleansers that are free from harsh chemicals. If your skin is on the oily side, a foaming cleanser is a great choice. For those with drier skin, a cream-based cleanser will do the trick. Here are my recommendations:

2. Do Moisturise Regularly

Even if your skin is oily, moisturising is a must. Opt for lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturisers that won’t clog your pores but will keep your skin hydrated and balanced. Here are some of my favourites for teenage skin:

3. Do Incorporate Spot Treatments

For those stubborn breakouts that appear out of nowhere, keep products with active ingredients on hand. It’s important to make sure these products are best suited to your skin type so I always recommend having a consultation with a Skincare Specialist first to get recommended for the perfect fit.

The Don’ts of Teenage Skincare

1. Don’t Over Exfoliate

Exfoliating can help keep your skin smooth and clear, but doing it too often can irritate your skin and make breakouts worse. Stick to exfoliating once a week using a chemical exfoliant with AHAs or BHAs.

2. Don’t Pick at Your Skin

It’s tempting to pop that pimple, but picking at your skin can lead to scarring and more inflammation. Instead, focus on treating your blemishes with the right products and give your skin time to heal.

3. Don’t Use Harsh Products

Avoid skincare products that contain alcohol or strong fragrances—they can strip your skin of its natural oils and cause irritation. This is especially important when trying out new products as you head back to school.

Back-to-School Skincare Tips

As you gear up for the new school year, keep these tips in mind:

  • Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water is key to keeping your skin looking fresh and healthy.

  • Get Enough Sleep: Lack of sleep can lead to dull skin and more breakouts. Aim for at least 8 hours a night.

  • Manage Stress: High stress levels can trigger breakouts. Consider taking a break from social media and technology, or doing something grounding, like journaling.

  • Keep Your Hands Clean: Avoid touching your face throughout the day - dirty hands can transfer bacteria, leading to more acne.

Teenage Skin Treatments Worth Considering

If you’re really suffering with your skin and it’s affecting your confidence, then perhaps it’s time to book in for a professional skin evaluation and treatment. Here at The Skin Warrior, I offer specific consultations and treatments for teen skin to get even the most extreme acne under control.

This is a wonderful alternative to visiting a doctor who may recommend harsh prescriptive drugs and products which don’t solve the problem in the long run, and have many side effects.

Clear Skin for Getting Back To School

Getting your skincare routine sorted before heading back to school is a smart move that will keep your skin clear and healthy throughout the year. Remember these do’s and don’ts as you explore skincare options that work for you - because everyone deserves to feel confident in their skin, no matter their age! With a little consistency and care, you’ll be walking into school each day with a radiant, confident glow.
